If you have been trying to conceive a child, you are familiar with all of the ups and downs, the doctor visits, the talks, the recommendations of what to eat, what not to eat, what medications to take and not to take -it is a roller coaster. The first plan of action for most of us is taking Clomid. Clomid, or clomiphene citrate, or Serophene is a medication that is commonly used for the treatment of infertility. I took that for the four years with two different doctors. For those who might be prescribed Clomid for the first time, it does have side effects like hot flashes, mild cramps, headaches, and mood swings (which I can attest come on strong!) My doctor started me on 50 mg 1 pill a day for days 3 through 7 of my menstrual cycle. That unfortunately did not work. When he upped me to 100 mg 2 pills a day, along with baby dust, ovulation kits, Universe glitter – I was able to conceive. Clomid finally worked!
Jump now to the present, I have an one year old and we’re now trying for number 2. We did three cycles of Clomid and no baby. So this go around, my doctor prescribed Femara. Femara or Letrozole is an oral drug which can be an effective fertility treatment for women with ovulation problems, or for those with unexplained infertility. Clomid and Femara are pretty much the same. I had to take one pill a day 2.5 mg on days 3 through 7 of my cycle. Because I never took Femara, I decided to take it a night so I wouldn’t be affected by the side effects (the same as Clomid). The only issue I have with Femara is when I woke up, I’d have the most horrendous headaches. It almost felt as if my head was going to explode. After doing a little more research, I read that Femara can increase the risk of increased blood pressure. A few months before I got pregnant, I was given medication for high blood pressure. I’m not sure if the headaches are related but my gut says so. As of today, we are on our second Femara cycle and currently in the waiting game to see if we’re pregnant or not.
Have you tried Clomid and/or Femara? What did you think? What was the result?
